California law provides that it is unlawful for an employer to refuse to hire a person, to discharge a person from employment, or to discriminate against a person because of a conflict between the person’s religious belief and any employment requirement. An employer faced with this situation must explore all available reasonable alternatives in terms of accommodating the religious belief. Furthermore, the term religious belief includes observance of a religious holy day or Sabbath, and the time necessary to travel to and from a religious observance.
This law applies to all aspects of religious observance, belief, and practice.
